I think you need a machine a bit more powerful than a centrino.
Sounds like you need an IBM system 36 that can handle multiple functions with large files.
Turn off all non essential programs- screen savers, etc. How much ram do you have ?
Hard drive is ok, but how much processing power do you have?

Is it definitely hanging - I mean is the whole system locked?
How much RAM do you have and how big is the virtual RAM?
I guess the 80GB refers to disk space. What processor speed?
